Sitting with his back to a wall, Logan had his guitar resting on his crossed legs. It was nearing twilight now, with shadows playing across his face. His hair was hanging in his face and his eyes somewhere far off. Logan was playing a song, just strumming the strings until his attention was broken. But before that happened, he replayed a conversation in his head. The conversation had been on his mind for a whole now, ever since it had happened a couple of years ago. It was a bit hazy now, with most of the details worn down but Logan could remember it more or less.
She offered me the cigarette again, looking at me with dazzling green eyes. I shook my head.
"Suit yourself, babe." Alice liked to call any of her friends 'babe', and Logan was no exception. They had only been dating for a few days, but they were fairly close. They had been good friends beforehand but now things seemed a little bit different. What had he expected? She puffed on the cigarette, messily blowing out the smoke.
"Can I ask you something?" She said.
"Shoot." I turned my head to look at her, waiting expectantly. But she hesitated.
"I'm sorry about your dad, you know."
I still looked at her then looked down at my hands, fidgeting slightly.
"He'll be around someday."
"Someday. Not today. Or tomorrow."
"But there is going to be a tomorrow, Logan. Someday."
"Yeah, suppose so."
She turned my head so that I was looking at her. She looked me in the eyes.
"We're going to get out of here. You'll make something of yourself and I'll be there cheering you on. Babe, always. Remember that."
Well, Logan hadn't seen that girl for years after she got knocked up by her boyfriend. Logan's attention was broken by his dog, Hayden, as his nose bumped against Logan's hand.
I'm on it, bud. Hold your horses.
He warmed up, clearing his throat as he began the song.
I found God on the corner of 1st and Amistad
Where the West was all but won
All alone, smoking his last cigarette
I said, "Where've you been?" He said, "Ask anything."
Where were you, when everything was falling apart.
All my days were spent by the telephone that never rang
And all I needed was a call that never came
To the corner of 1st and Amistad.
Logan wasn't a religious man but the song did him some good. It was a heck of a good one for attracting some business.
